Who does not want to be Big Brother? To become the all-seeing, powerful god of all? Well, possibly not "domineering god of all" but being the all-seeing person will be simply as commanding, don't you believe so? That could be one reason why there are several concerns when it comes to utilizing hidden spy cameras, invasion of privacy being one of these. Power is basically something that everyone abhors and, paradoxically, everybody wants. Spy cams, while they are a benefit to a certain person, can be so destructive to the other. They could be an important tool or something that will bring you down.
There is this one situation involving a teacher who made use of a hidden camera cloaked as a button to videotape naughty students in school. The students and their families have filed complaints against the said teacher for "abusing her authority" as well as recording the students without their permission. Yes, it was illicit for the teacher to do such, but if we evaluate the other direction, we can see that what the teacher was basically doing was exposing these behavioral concerns to the public so that they could be addressed accordingly. I am somewhat sure that the Virginia Tech tragedy is still recent on everyone's minds. Such behavioral leanings could have been noticed beforehand and subsequently stopped the incident from occurring. If a hidden spy camera is what it takes to avoid such tragic occurrences, then I won't mind teachers recording their students at school by any means.
Nevertheless, there are also a number who abuse the benefits of hidden video cameras. I will suppose all are aware of concerns of shocking demeanor caught on tape that are being used to blackmail a person. Or those that blatantly invades other individual's privacy as in placing hidden cameras in areas wherein surveillance isn't necessary, such as the bathroom or personal quarters for purposes of personal gratification or malicious intent. Stalking utilizing spy video cams is also another form of abuse of this technology.
Nevertheless, there is one thing that surprises me. Some homeowners use nanny cameras to regulate their baby-sitters as well as house maids while they are away. And these nannies are not conscious of the existence of the spy camera until they get caught performing some monkey business and dealt with about it. Nevertheless, nobody seems to be whining. When they get caught abusing a kid or doing something inappropriate, the issue of the nanny's right to privacy is never raised. It's because the owners possess the authority to do whatever they want to protect the family and the house helper did something wrong.
Hence, when is the utilization of covert surveillance cameras right and when is it not? Apparently, the thin red demarcation dividing them is much thinner than we believe. When the person making use of the surveillance camera is in authority, its utilization is justified. Yet if resorting to use covert spy cams will make us safer, then I'm for it. Moreover, why will I be concerned about it when I am not doing anything that is against the law or is morally wrong? Yet as long as they maintain well behind the line, it won't be an issue.
